"Where to start…
My most professional answer to the 'Charism Connection' focus question about the foundation of faith I received from my experience at Cor Jesu would go something like this:
'Cor Jesu instilled an undyingly strong relationship with Christ, upon which my interest in service grew. Cor Jesu gave me many opportunities to practice my faith through service, and I’ve been focused on making a difference ever since. I graduated from Cor Jesu and went on to continue my Catholic education at Notre Dame, volunteering in my spare time and participating in the Mass on campus. After graduating from Notre Dame, I chose to continue that spirit of service that Cor Jesu first fostered, and I joined the Peace Corps in order to teach English in Kazakhstan.'
…But that’s not the way I want to answer this question. While all of that is most definitely the truth, I’m sure I lost all but the most interested readers because that’s what any Cor Jesu graduate could write. That looks great on paper, but the real impact Cor Jesu left on me isn’t on paper. It’s the personal, real things I say in my everyday conversations about Cor Jesu that prove that it still holds a very special place in my heart.
The foundation of faith that began at Cor Jesu impacted my life in a huge way because through that faith, I made friends that still call me up for everything from getting lunch to just needing a laugh. We were the girls who did the retreats together; we were the girls who did the weeklong service projects together; and then we were the girls who led the Kairos retreats later so that our other classmates could experience faith like we did. I can honestly say that my life would be different if I hadn’t gotten close to these girls.
The foundation of faith that began at Cor Jesu influenced my life in that one day, while looking at college books in the career center, I overheard a classmate talking about how she wanted to go to a college where a Catholic mass was easily accessible. At that point it was something I (regrettably) had never thought about, but the way she said it brought my attention to it, and I ended up looking at, loving, and attending Notre Dame. I can honestly say that my entire life would be different if I hadn’t made that choice.
The foundation of faith that began at Cor Jesu has influenced my life in that service is infused with my sense of self, and I never would have discovered that had it not been for the faith-based service projects that Cor Jesu made available to us. After Cor Jesu, not only did I continue my service in what I give, but I’ve continued to reap the rewards that doing service gives me. I am who I am, I do what I do, and I love what I love because of the purpose that service gives me. I can honestly say that my life would be completely different if I hadn’t been given those opportunities to serve.
The foundation of faith that began at Cor Jesu has influenced my life quite utterly and completely in that, to put it simply, I trust God. I don’t worry; I know He’s got it all under control and He’ll handle it, especially when I know it’s something that I can’t handle. Thankfully I learned this early on at Cor Jesu, after being introduced to Him through things such as the aforementioned service and friendships, my religion classes, and the atmosphere that Cor Jesu provided daily. I’m a much happier, much more positive, and much more compassionate person because I know God.
