An introductory study of accounting with emphasis on the accounting cycle, accounting terminology, the collection of accounting data, the recording of data into the accounting system, and the preparation and interpretation of basic financial statements. Topics include journals, worksheets, payroll, bank reconciliations, and the complete accounting cycle for a sole proprietorship.

Students will understand the nature and purpose of business while developing necessary technical knowledge and building entrepreneurial skills. The focus of the course will be on leadership skills, management, ethics, decision-making, planning and organizing. Students will also explore a variety of career opportunities in business leadership.

In today’s challenging economy, students must be prepared to function in an economic environment. This course is designed to utilize real world and problem-based projects to prepare students to develop financial goals and meet financial responsibilities. Topics to be explored include: applying and interviewing for a job, paychecks, taxes, banking, saving, investing, credit, insurance, budgeting and economic decision-making.

*BE401S meets for 3 weeks in June 2023.

BE401S meets May 30 - June 15, 2023 from 8 - 11:30 a.m. The summer school class has an additional fee of $500 and enrollment is limited to 25 students. Attendance at every meeting time is mandatory. After two absences, the student will receive an F, will be withdrawn from the course, and will NOT receive a refund.

A basic introductory course in personal computers using Microsoft Office and other software programs needed for courses at Cor Jesu. This course covers hardware, software, and operating concepts. Through hands on experience, students will develop 21st century research, problem solving, and communication skills. Students will create multimedia projects, learn to navigate successfully and safely on the World Wide Web, and begin to understand the logical structure of computer programming. Students will gain an understanding of correct keyboarding technique through independent work.

Introduction to program design and problem solving using the C programming language. Focus will be on writing and understanding programs in C++ using a modern software development environment -- Visual Studio or CodeBlocks. Programming topics include control structures and functions. Emphasis on critical thinking and problem solving skills will help the student be successful in this and future programming classes.

In this class, each student will develop their own unique web pages. Students will learn how to design, create, and maintain organized, cross-platform websites using XHTML and CSS. Topics covered include: standards-based code, aesthetic page layout, intuitive navigation, appropriate and legal content and accessible design.

Offered in 2022-2023, and in alternating years (next offered in Spring 2025).

This course is an introduction to program design and problem- solving using the Visual Basic programming language. The focus will be on the concepts of object-oriented programming, event-driven programming and designing effective graphical user interface (GUI) using Microsoft Visual Studio. Some major topics include animation, graphics, variables and loops. Emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills will help the student be successful in this and other classes.

Course was formerly named Independent Study in Broadcast Journalism 

This course will focus on helping students develop the skills of a top-level broadcast journalism producer. Skills such as effective decision making, staff coordination and management, programming consistency, formulating marketing projections, writing a broadcast plan, and developing top-tier management practices will be emphasized. Students who take this course will learn how to be effectively produce the CJTV Morning Show, and are responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of production and development. Leadership theory, broadcast theory, and human resources development studies will be used to help the students who take this course become the most effective leaders  they can be. In addition to cultivating professional relationships in the broadcast and business worlds, these students will leave the course with a well-developed management style which will enable them to become a successful broadcast journalism producer. 

Prerequisites: “B” or better in Broadcast Technology I (formerly called Introduction to Journalism) and teacher approval

Course was formerly named Independent Study in Motion Graphics 

This course will focus on helping students further their skills in the field of Motion Graphics. Students will build on the work they began in Broadcast Technology I by using industry-standard software Adobe After Effects to learn about shape layers, expressions, key frames, scripts, null objects, and blending modes. Students will use their skills to create motion graphics which will air on CJTV and/or other venues. Skills such as design, composition, balance, mathematical formulas, programming, meeting customer requirements and problem solving will be emphasized.

Students who take this course will effectively interpret the motion graphic needs of large-scale projects on CJTV and provide content which will meet those needs. At the same time, independent study students will make connections with industry professionals and network to explore the emerging field of Motion Graphics.

Students will leave the course with a well-developed portfolio in the field of Motion Graphics which will enable them to be accepted into an accredited university Motion Graphics program and later become a successful Motion Designer.

Limited to two students per semester.

This course will focus on further developing the broadcast technology skills as a top-level broadcast technology executive producer or a motion graphics designer. Executive Producer or Motion Graphic Designer will focus on improving leadership skills in the areas such as effective decision making, programming consistency, formulating marketing strategies, and staff coordination and management.

The Broadcast Technology Executive Producer responsibilities include overseeing and coordinating all special projects, producer and staff management, effectively producing the CJTV Morning Show, and developing management best practices.

The Motion Graphic Designer responsibilities include coordinating the daily live stream and recording of the CJTV Morning Show, working with the show producers and/or executive producer to design and develop transitions for the daily show as well as any special projects, and further develop their skills in Motion Graphics. The Motion Graphics Designer will build on the work that they began in Broadcast Technology using Motion Graphics class.

Prerequisites: Broadcast Technology I and Broadcast Technology II or Broadcast Technology using Motion Graphics with a “B” or better and with teacher approval.

Join us and be a part of something great: telling the story of the year. Why get involved in the process of creating your yearbook? Why not!? You will spend the semester documenting news, achievements, events, and most importantly, memories that your classmates will cherish for years to come. In addition to helping create an important piece of CJ history, you’ll pick up some highly-marketable communication and technical skills.

Emphasis will be placed on journalistic writing, the fundamentals of design, basic photography, and use of the industry-standard for desktop publishing software, Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator.

Couldn’t get enough of Yearbook I? Join for a second semester! With the skills from Yearbook I in-hand, students in Yearbook II will be poised to take greater leadership on yearbook staff.

Possibilities for students enrolled in Yearbook II include managing a full section of the book, designing specialty pages, and serving as copy editors, using industry-standard software, Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator. Ultimately, students in Yearbook II will work with the advisor and editors to determine how they can best serve the staff and make their edition of the Corde one for the books.

Do you want to take charge of the story of the year? Students who take this course will serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Corde yearbook using Adobe InDesign as well as Google and Microsoft programs. In addition to continuing to put into practice the journalism skills learned in Yearbook I, students will take full charge of the design and production of the yearbook. Student editors will teach new yearbook staffers a variety of journalistic skills, manage the staffers’ workload and the timeline of the book’s production.
