Fall Sports Information

Fall Tryouts begin Monday, August 12, 2024. Cross Country, Field Hockey, Softball and Volleyball all need to check-in at the Student Commons with the Athletic Department staff 30 minutes before going to practice. Golf and Tennis should go to the site of the tryout.

Tryouts are a minimum of 3 days and are typically completed by the end of the first week. After tryouts are complete, practices continue Mon – Fri and some weekend days until the season is complete. Athletes are expected to be at all practices and contests for the season.

It is possible to tryout for more than one sport, if tryouts are not at the same time. However, given the heat of summer and the stress of tryouts, we encourage athletes to prioritize and tryout for just one sport. Cross country, freshman field hockey and softball may take more participants if athletes do not make their first choice sport. Please reach out to the Athletic Director if you do not make a team and you are interested in moving to one of these programs.

Any student athlete that makes a Cor Jesu team is required to attend a rules meeting with a parent. More information on this meeting will be provided after tryouts.

Please make sure you have a water bottle with you each day.

PRIVIT Account

Any returning student athlete in grades 10-12 interested in trying out for a sport needs to update their account on PRIVIT.
Incoming freshmen need to create a new account by July 15.
If the student has a PRIVIT account at another school, a different email address must be used to create an account for Cor Jesu.
Please make sure that email addresses for both student and parents are entered into PRIVIT.
PRIVIT is used to communicate with participants during the season. If you have a new physical for 2022, you can upload it to your PRIVIT account.
The 2021 MSHSAA physical on file at Cor Jesu is good for 2 years, unless otherwise noted by the athlete's doctor.

2024 Fall Sports Tryouts

Cross Country

The Cor Jesu Cross Country team will begin practicing on Monday, August 12, and as XC is a MSHSAA sanctioned high school sport, a serious commitment is required. Although cuts are not made based on speed/ability or race performance results, retention on the team will be based on attitude, sportsmanship, effort, and reliability.

Make sure you’re well hydrated when you come to practice
Bring a water bottle
Wear a watch to keep track of your time
Returning runners bring their summer running logs the first day

Practice will be held 6 – 7:30 p.m. the first week.
If the heat index requires, practice may be moved to a 7 p.m. start.

Starting with WEEK 2 and throughout the season, practice will be Monday-Friday from 4 – 5:30 p.m., with the weekly schedule of practice locations will be distributed on Sundays.

Field Hockey

Tryouts are Monday, August 12 - Friday, August 16.

Varsity/JV tryouts from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Freshman tryouts are from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Freshmen are welcome to try out for JV and still be considered for either JV or freshman teams. You only have to come to one tryout slot.

Please bring your shin guards, mouthguard, water bottle, cleats and tennis shoes, and stick (sticks available to borrow if needed) with you to tryouts as well as a shirt with your last name written on your back. You can either pin your name on or use sharpie on an old shirt.

Due to court availabilities, this could change, but is the current plan.

A Few Tips

Tryouts will require that you know how to play and score a singles match. We typically have a large turnout for tryouts and cuts are likely, so it's important to get your practice in if you plan to come out for the team.
Even if you are a beginning player, knowing how to play a basic singles match and be able to serve and return the ball is necessary. We love our beginning players, and have seen many grow into strong players during their high school years. Even if this is not the level that you/your daughter is currently playing, it is certainly possible to get there by early August!
USTA match play is a great way to prepare for tryouts, as are private lessons and group lessons. In my experience, a few private lessons with a coach and then practicing independently can sometimes have a bigger impact than group clinics. Some of our seniors mentioned that they could possibly be available to teach/play tennis with younger/newer players.
Our team practices or has a match every weekday starting August 12. The JV season goes until the first week of October and the Varsity season can last until late October. Most, if not all, practices will be at Dwight Davis in Forest Park. Match locations vary but our home courts are Dwight Davis.
