Through the progressive study of world language, a Cor Jesu graduate will exhibit a greater awareness of and respect for different cultures, the ability to think critically about language structure, and the skills necessary to interact meaningfully with the global community.
Students are required to take two consecutive years of the same language while at Cor Jesu.
An introduction to the study of Chinese language, history, and culture. The emphasis of this course is speaking and culture rather than writing characters. Students will aquire basic conversational skills through the Romanized Pinyin system. Students will explore the Chinese community within St. Louis and draw connections to the freshman history curriculum.
This course reinforces the content learned in Chinese I. There is a greater emphasis on Character writing with less dependence on the Romanized pinyin system and more stress placed on proper tone pronunciation. Students will explore and compare aspects of modern Chinese culture.
Language skills gained in Chinese I and II are expanded in this course. Emphasis will be placed on the improvement of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as the learning of additional written characters and their combinations. Students will deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and develop an analytical perspective towards different cultures.
Prerequisite: “B” or better in Mandarin Chinese II
Chinese IV is a synthesis of everything learned in Chinese I through III. In addition to continuously improving language skills with various materials, students are encouraged to individualize their learning through projects and presentations. Students are exposed to “real-life” Chinese and are expected to keep up with Chinese current events.
Prerequisite: “B” or better in Mandarin Chinese III
This introductory course emphasizes the fundamental skills of the language: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing through various activities, with emphasis on cooperative learning. Readings are also used to explore French culture.
French II continues to develop essential skills introduced in French I. There is a greater emphasis on reading comprehension through a collection of short stories. The students work on more sophisticated grammar and deeper cultural understanding. There is a continued emphasis on cooperative learning.
SLU Course: FREN1010 Communicating in French I (2nd sem. only - 3 credits) In this honors course, emphasis is placed on advanced grammar as well as reading and writing skills. Students read a collection of short stories in Le Petit Nicolas in first semester and read Le Petit Prince in second semester. Students can earn credit through Saint Louis University in addition to high school credit with approval from SLU.
SLU Course: FREN1020 Communicating in French II (3 Credits) and FREN2010 Intermediate French: Language and Culture (3 Credits) Emphasis is placed on oral communication, as well as, reading and writing skills through a focus on French current event topics which center around personal identities, technology, beauty and aesthetics, the environment, and contemporary life. Students in this honors class will listen to authentic pieces from podcasts and interviews. They will read several literary works, newspaper, as well as magazine articles, and will interpret charts based on context. Periodic tests, oral reports and short critical papers are required. Students enrolled in an AP course have the option to take the AP French exam in May.
Taught in French, this course offers an optional fifth year to students who have already successfully completed the four-year program. Students will work closely with the instructor to accomplish pre-set goals, including the reading of a novel(s), oral presentations to lower level classes, etc. Students will also be responsible for the planning and leading of activities in lower level classes under the supervision of the upper level teacher.
Prerequisites: French IV and departmental signature
This course offers an opportunity to study a classical language through grammar, syntax and translation. Basic vocabulary and word derivations are studied along with introductory level Roman history, culture and mythology.
SLU Course: LATN1010 Reading Latin I (2nd sem. only - 3 credits)
This honors course continues the study of Latin grammar, syntax, translation, vocabulary and word derivations at a faster pace. Once the class finishes Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4, students will sample texts from Cicero, Catullus, Horace, and Ovid. This course also continues the study of Roman history, culture, and mythology at a deeper level. In the second semester, credit can be earned with approval through Saint Louis University in addition to high school credit.
SLU Course: LATN1020 Reading Latin II (3 credits) and LATN2010 Intermediate Latin: Language and Literature (3 credits) This honors course follows the AP syllabus and is designed to prepare students for the AP Latin exam. The class focuses on two major works: Julius Caesar’s De Bello Gallico and Vergil’s Aeneid. The course emphasizes translation, analysis, comparison and interpretation of these two works. This course will also include short analytical essays in English, since this is a significant part of the AP exam. Credit can be earned through Saint Louis University in addition to high school credit. Students enrolled in an AP course have the option to take the AP Latin exam in May.
This honors course is available for those who have already completed ACC Latin IV/AP Latin IV. Students in this course will independently study Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Amores. Students will translate, analyze, interpret and perform dramatic readings of these works. Each student will work with the instructor to create a major project each semester. Students will have input into the nature and scope of the project.
Prerequisites: Latin IV and departmental signature
Instruction is given in understanding, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish with emphasis on vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Through a variety of activities, students will obtain skills in communication and comprehension of the language.
Spanish II continues to develop essential skills introduced in Spanish I with an emphasis on reading, grammatical structures, oral and written expressions. The Spanish and Latin American cultures are studied through readings and class discussions.
This course is offered to students who want to continue learning the Spanish language but do not wish to take an honors class. The class will be conversation based with emphasis on communication about contemporary Hispanic culture.
SLU Course: SPAN1010 Communicating in Spanish I (2nd sem. only - 3 credits) ACC Spanish III is a continuation of Spanish II, with emphasis placed on conversation, reading and writing as well as on the history and culture of Spain and Latin America. In this honors course, students will read selected works by Spanish and Latin American writers. Juniors and seniors can earn credit through Saint Louis University in addition to high school credit with approval from SLU.
GRADES 11-12 LEVEL 4.8 1 CREDIT SEM 1-2 SLU COURSE: SPAN1020 Communicating in Spanish II (3 Credits) and SPAN2010 Intermediate Spanish: Language and Culture (3 Credits)
In ACC Spanish IV emphasis will be placed on oral communication in class discussion. Class work will include the study of Hispanic art, literature and culture. Students will refine their skills through grammar reviews and will learn some of the subtleties of the Spanish language. Students may earn six credits from Saint Louis University in addition to the high school credit.
Prerequisite: “B” or better in ACC Spanish III or an “A” in Spanish III
This course is available as a fifth year of Spanish for students who have placed out of Spanish Level I or Level II or for students finishing Level III who want a course specifically aimed at preparing for the AP test. The class, taught in Spanish, will add to an existing core of vocabulary and work at refining grammar. Students will continue to read and listen to Hispanic cultural information and use test-taking strategies to discuss it in spoken and written AP-style essays.
Prerequisite: “A” in ACC Spanish III or an “A” in Spanish III with permission of instructor or “B+” or better in ACC Spanish IV
