Cor Jesu Academy
The Cor Jesu Glossary

Here is your guide to the words, traditions and experiences that make Cor Jesu, Cor Jesu.

Spend enough time around Cor Jesu Academy and you'll hear words and phrases that might leave you wondering, Wait...what does that mean?

From beloved traditions to unique programs, these are the terms every Charger should know.

Activity Period

Built into every school day, Activity Period gives students dedicated time to meet with clubs, receive extra academic support, connect with teachers, attend assemblies or simply recharge.

Block Schedule

Instead of traditional daily class periods, Cor Jesu uses a block schedule that provides longer class times. This allows for deeper discussions, hands-on learning, labs, projects and meaningful collaboration.

Capers

Capers are seven senior leaders who embody Charger spirit throughout the school year. Wearing their signature red capes that spell SPIRIT!, they lead cheers at athletic events, rally students during First Friday all-school lunches, and help build the energy and traditions that make Cor Jesu so special.

Chargers

A Charger is a horse, and Cor Jesu's beloved mascot is Bolt. You'll often see her leading cheers, posing for photos and bringing Charger spirit to life at events throughout the year.

CPI (Corporate Partners Initiative)

CPI connects students with real-world experiences through partnerships with leading companies and organizations. From internships and mentorships to career exploration and hands-on learning, CPI helps students discover what's possible beyond high school.

Enthronement

Each year, Cor Jesu celebrates the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart, a special liturgy that reflects our charism and deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During the celebration, seven seniors are named to the Enthronement Court after being selected by their peers, faculty and staff for exemplifying the qualities of the Sacred Heart and living out Cor Jesu's Core Values

exp3

Short for experience, exposure and exploration, exp3 gives students opportunities to step beyond the classroom through immersive learning experiences, professional networking and career discovery.

First Friday

On the first Friday of each month, the entire Cor Jesu community comes together to celebrate Mass. Later in the day, students gather for an all-school lunch where the Capers lead school cheers.

First Lunch & Second Lunch

Students are assigned to either First Lunch or Second Lunch based on the class they have during third period.

Funderwear

One of Cor Jesu's most spirited traditions, Funderwear is an annual service competition with St. Joseph's Academy that has been going strong for more than 20 years. Students collect new socks, underwear and sports bras for St. Patrick Center, providing essential items for individuals experiencing homelessness. The week concludes with a rivalry basketball game, a tug-of-war and the announcement of the winner of the coveted Pants trophy.

Girls Schools Unite

An annual giving challenge that brings independent girls' schools together in a little friendly competition. Alumnae make gifts to The Charger Fund, helping provide tuition assistance and support the programs that make Cor Jesu extraordinary.

Hearts in Motion

Hearts in Motion is Cor Jesu's Global Education program, offering students opportunities to learn through educational travel, service-learning, cultural immersion and experiential learning.

INC

INC is an annual career networking event created exclusively for Cor Jesu's college-aged alumnae. Through a career fair-style experience, participants connect with employers, explore internship and job opportunities, receive professional coaching, polish their resumes and build confidence with complimentary professional headshots, all while strengthening the powerful Cor Jesu alumnae network

May Crowning

Each May, the Cor Jesu community honors the Blessed Mother during May Crowning at our final First Friday Liturgy of the school year. One student from each class is selected by her peers to serve on the May Crowning Court in recognition of her embodiment of the virtues of Mary.

Our Charism

Our charism is the heart of who we are. As an Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus school, our mission is to share the love of the Heart of Christ. It shapes everything we do, from the way we learn and lead to the way we care for one another.

Penny Queen

Penny Queen is Cor Jesu's annual, student-led Mission Week, bringing together students, families, alumnae and the greater community to support charities chosen by our students. Through events, friendly competition and acts of generosity, Chargers put their faith into action

RISE

A three-year leadership and academic enrichment program that prepares middle school girls for success through advanced learning opportunities, mentorship and personal growth.

Sacred Heart

More than a symbol, the Sacred Heart reminds us of Christ's endless love and is the foundation of our mission and spirituality.

Spirit Week

A week filled with dress-up days, competitions and Charger pride. Spirit Week celebrates our community while building friendships and creating memories that last long after graduation.

The Charger Fund

Cor Jesu's annual fund supports the people, programs and opportunities that make a Cor Jesu education possible, including tuition assistance for more than half of our students.

Carolyn Sinak Bergman ’19 shares how her family’s devotion to Blessed Clelia Merloni began during her father’s recovery from Guillain-Barré Syndrome and deepened when they discovered a remarkable connection to the miracle attributed to Blessed Clelia’s intercession. Years later, a visit to Blessed Clelia’s resting place in Rome reminded Carolyn of her call to follow Clelia’s example by sharing the love of Christ with others each day.
